Last night Colson Whitehead won the National Book Award for his novel The Underground Railroad, a important book that chronicles a young slave’s adventures, from the hellish Georgia plantation where she is born, through many treacherous Southern states with varying barbaric laws, towards freedom in the north. This is an extraordinary, brutal, and challenging read. Oprah just picked it for her famous book club, and now it’s been recognized by the National Book Foundation.
I was lucky enough to talk with Colson about the book earlier this year. you can listen to the Lit Up podcast episode HERE.
